“ try to remember the kind of September ”( W H E N L I F E W A S S L O W & & S O M E L L O W )- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The iron rings of the swing set creaked slightly when weight was added to the seat, making the same noise when it was pushed back and forth slightly by the nineteen year old who was sitting on it. The park didn't look a whole lot different then it had when he had left Friendship three years prior. The swings were still squeaky, the merry-go-round was dirty and rusted in some areas, and the ground underneath all the play toys was just hard packed dirt. He remembered seeing some of the parks in Dallas and how they all had rock or bark underneath the toys, but not here; only them elementary school had that. The sky was a light grey and if one looked then they could see where the sun was at, even though it was shining through the clouds. The air was crisp and cold and Andrew's hands were tucked snugly into the arms of his hoodie while he gripped the cold metal of the swing he was on, his green eyes staring at the newest edition to the park; a large wooden play thing that had three or four plastic slides on it. He wasn't actually staring at the toy, however. His eyes were focused on the cemetery that was viewable from where he sat despite the fact that it was quite a few blocks away.
Andrew had just been there visiting his parents graves and was on the way back when he passed by the park. He walked by it nearly everyday but today, for some off the wall reason, he had the urge to actually stay. It was cold, there was no doubt of that, and it didn't help any that all he was wearing was a hoodie, albeit a thick one, and he could feel the tip of his nose growing cold. Andrew sniffed lightly and wriggled his cold nose, hoping for some kind of feeling. He felt his phone vibrating in his pocket and Andrew pulled it out, expecting it to be a phone call, but it was just a text message from a co-worker, asking him if he could cover for her for a few hours. Andrew sighed and told her fine, even though he knew that a few hours would end up being all night, Andrew needed to money. Never mind the fact that it was his one night off all week.
Slipping the phone back into his pocket Andrew leaned his head against the chain of the swing and let out a jaw popping yawn and he tried to ignore the fact that the cold was seeping from the chain and through his beanie. Raising his head again, Andrew rubbed the spot, screwing the beanie up, so he removed it, shaking his head and letting his dark blonde hair fly around a little before letting it settle. Wringing the beanie between his hands Andrew wondered why he was still just sitting here. The entire reason he had left the cemetery was because he had started to get too cold and yet here he was, sitting in the park, and doing nothing but moving his legs just enough to move the swing.
Movement caught his eye and Andrew looked up, spotting someone enter the small park and he blinked a few times, knowing that he recognized the girl from somewhere. Andrew kept staring, his eyebrows furrowed while he tried to remember, and then it hit him. Sofia. He had known her in high school, well kind of anyway; it was more like he had seen her in a couple classes and they said hi when they were walking down the hallways of the high school. He found himself wondering if it really was her though and could only think of one way to find out. "Sofia?" he asked hesitantly, hoping that he was right and hadn't just made a fool of himself.

I NEED ANOTHER STORY. SOMETHING TO GET OFF MY CHEST.I'M GONNA GIVE ALL MY SECRETS AWAY.TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. SOMETHING THAT WAS LIKE THOSE YEARS.------------------------------------------------------------------ A cool gust of air greeted Sofia as she pulled the door to her grandparent's house shut and stepped out into the cold winter air. The nineteen year old shivered slightly as she pulled her coat tighter around her body and walked quickly down the sidewalk. Her eyes glanced at the sky; the dark, almost menacing gray, seemed to be promising snow soon. Sofia didn't take too much notice to it, though. After living in Friendship, Maine her entire life it was just a fact of life that you got used to. Winters were going to be cold and snow filled. Because of this, her parents had sent her to her grandparent's house to drop off some food and medicine, just in case they did end up with a bad storm. Now, since her errands were done, all Sofia wanted to do was get some sketches in before heading back to her family's restaurant for her next shift later that evening.
Ever since her grandfather had fallen ill, Sofia felt like her entire life revolved around that restaurant. She'd given up a lot in the past year for it. Granted, she wasn't one to complain about it; it was her own choice. Her family and loved ones always came first in her eyes. However, sometimes Sofia did find herself wondering what her life would be like had she decided to go on to college. She really couldn't picture it, but she knew that it'd probably be a lot different. Her family counted on her a lot. That was one of the main reasons that she never told them of her intent to go to college. Sofia figured that there would be plenty of time for school later on, after her grandfather got better. She could always enroll in Brummel University in the upcoming years. It seemed like a nice school. Sure, it wasn't her first choice... but she could live with it.
Sofia glanced down at the sidewalk for a few seconds, considering this as she approached the park. The park was one of her favorite places to sketch. There was always something new there, and this time of year it always seemed to be about empty. This made it nice to sketch the scenery, but a bit lonely. Sofia enjoyed having a little commotion around. Living in such a small town, you didn't often get too much commotion. In fact, their little town was pretty dull, if Sofia did say so herself. She loved it regardless, though. She'd never know any different.
Arriving in the park, Sofia lifted her scarf up a bit to cover up her chin. It was chilly. She started down the main trail of the park, deciding to start off in her usual spot by the old rusted merry-go-round. It provided a nice view of the local scenery -the cemetery, fields, the park, and just the little town itself. She enjoyed sitting on it and just sketching out what she saw; their little town was quite pretty for sketching. Sofia didn't quite make it to the merry-go-round, however, when she heard a rather hesitant voice echo across the near empty park. "Sofia?"
Jumping slightly, as she had thought the park was empty, Sofia spun on her heel, her eyes skimming the area for who had called out to her. At first, she didn't see anyone, but then she noticed a blond sitting on the swing set. He looked very familiar, and Sofia quickly changed her direction. She walked carefully toward the old metal swing set, catching a better glimpse of the boy. It was then that she definitely realized she knew him.
"Andrew? ...as in, Andy Zimmerman?" Sofia questioned softly, rather surprised by her findings. She knew her voice clearly showed this, but she couldn't help it. She'd went to school with the boy; he'd been in her class since kindergarten. She'd always found him sweet. Though he wasn't her closest friend, she always made it a point to say hi when she'd seen him in the halls, or talk to him if they had classes together. But, their sophomore year he had moved away. His parents had passed away, and Sofia had felt awful for him. The poor boy had to go through so much that year...
Sofia quickly caught herself getting lost in thoughts. Now, close to the swing set, Sofia's thoughts were confirmed, and she beamed. "Oh, it is you, Andy! You're back!" The teen continued to grin, opening her arms to him for a hug. Yes, Sofia was still her overly outgoing self that she'd been in high school. "I had no idea; are you here to stay?" She gushed. She had about a million other questions for him... but she managed to refrain herself. No need to overwhelm him just yet. Sofia was clearly surprised though. It changed her day quite a bit.

“ try to remember the kind of September ”( W H E N L I F E W A S S L O W & & S O M E L L O W )- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In a small town with only one school district it was hard not to at least know about everyone, let alone know them personally. Andrew had been in school with Sofia up until sophomore year when he left for Texas and he hadn’t seen her since then, so it was possible that he could have been mistaken. But if he was then he’d be surprised because the similarities were too close to be coincidence. After coming back to Friendship he had met up with one friend and from there had managed to connect with a few others, who hadn’t left the small town, but there weren’t very many of those, and while he had thought about her Andrew had figured that Sofia had probably left for something bigger. She jumped when he said her name and turned around, looking at him for a minute before walking forward and the closer she got the more sure Andrew was of himself that he had gotten it right. "Andrew? ...as in, Andy Zimmerman?" There was surprise in her voice and evidently she was just as surprised to see him as he was to see her, but at least Sofia recognized him. It was always awkward when one person remembered the other but not visa-versa, and any conversation after that was just weird and hesitant. A smile came across her face and Andy, despite himself, gave a smile that was almost as bright. "Oh, it is you, Andy! You're back!" Andrew stood off the swing and walked the couple more feet that were between them, bending down so that he could give her a hug.
“The one and only,” he said. “I’m really glad it was you when I called your name, otherwise I’d look like a fool.” Andrew gave a light laugh as he spoke and as far as he could tell she hadn’t changed since high school, which was nice to know since it seemed everyone else that he met up with had. Considering he had just gotten done visiting the graves of his parents and how cold it was, Andrew found himself pleased that he had run into her here, though he had to wonder why she was even out here in the first place. He straightened and reached up, pulling the beanie on his head down a little bit more so that it covered the tips of his ears, which were starting to get painfully cold before sticking his hands into his tattered hoodie. "I had no idea; are you here to stay?" Andrew gave a light nod, “yeah, I don’t plan on leaving any time soon.” Especially since he now had himself settled in his own home and while it wasn’t nearly as large as the two previous houses he had lived in, it was comfortable.
Andrew took a couple steps back again and sat down on the swing, motioning to the one next to him so they could sit and talk. Wrapping his arms around the chains he looked at her, “so what have you been up to anyway? I thought you had planned on leaving as soon as you had the chance.” It seemed to be a common goal for everyone who had been raised in such a small town, even after the university had been built. Andrew hadn’t been any different up until he had been forced to move to Texas and learned that he wasn’t exactly cut out for life in a big city. Not only did he get lost way too easily, but he liked knowing more people than not knowing who they were. Made life so much easier. He tried to think of something else that wasn’t quite so lame to talk about, but Andrew had always been more of the type to let other people carry a conversation. It was probably a good thing that Sofia was more than capable of being able to do so.
